In the Summer of 2002 we
visited Montreal and stopped in Laprairie and St. Philippe. Andre Babeu
and Anne Roy were married in Laprairie in 1689. Several Babeu families
still live in Laprairie. Babeu families also lived in St. Philippe about
5 miles south of Laprairie. We found that almost no one spoke English,
but the people we met were very friendly and went out of their way to
help us.

We visited the cemeteries
in Laprairie and St. Philippe and photographed gravestones of a number
of Babeu relatives born in the mid-1800s, but did not find any Babeu
ancestors for our family line.

Above is the
Eglise Saint Philippe. The original church burned down.
After we returned
from our vacation we found this map on the Internet which includes Andre
Babeu Street in Laprairie, on the way to St. Philippe.
Two useful websites
found on the Internet help us to learn more about Laprairie yesterday
and today. Files extracted from those websites are found here on this
CD.

Jean
and Marguerite's son Andre was born in Lechevre,
Ile Oleron, Rochefort, Saintonage, France
in 1650. He was the first of the Babeu Family to travel to Quebec. Andre
Babeu married Anne Roy in LaPrairie, Quebec,
Canada in 1689. (Probably ALL Babeu, Babeuf and Babeux in
North America are descended from this couple.) LaPrairie is about 5
miles south of Montreal.
Their son Andre Babeu and
Marie-Madeliene Mesny also lived in LaPrairie,
Quebec.
Their son Andre Babeu and
Barbe Amable Chretien were married in 1753 in Montreal.
They then lived in St. Philippe, LaPrairie,
Quebec. (See the red star below). St.Philippe
is a small village in the County of Laprairie- about 5 miles from the
centre of the town of Laprairie.
Their son Etienne Babeu and
Marguerite L'Ecuyer were married in St. Philippe
in 1783.
| In the 1787 Census of Laprairie there are 8 Babeu's listed: Antoine,
Charles, Etienne, Francois, Joseph, Louis, Louis, and the widow
Babeu. Francois has 90 acres, 15 being cultivated, a house and a
barn. |
Their son Etienne Babeu and
Catherine Arteau-St. Pierre's son Etienne Babeu and Justine Chalifoux
were married in St. Philippe, La Prairie
in 1833. Their son Vinal Babeu was born there in 1835.
